How to Litter (Ron Wilson)

Dear Editor:

I was inspired to write these guidelines while picking up trash along Rt 9 as a part of last Saturday's Adopt-A-Highway program.

Guideline for Highway Littering

The following guidelines for highway littering will make the task of picking up the litter somewhat easier and safer.
1. Littering is not a distance contest. Close to the shoulder is better than deep into the woods. It can be dangerous in the woods
2. Glass bottles should be thrown in grassy or leafy areas, not on rocks. Picking up broken glass is dangerous.
3. Soft drink bottles should be emptied (rarely a problem with beer bottles). Carrying litter bags of half-full bottles is hard on the back.
4. Remove tops of bottles and put them in the ash tray. Bottles without tops can be picked up with the point of a pickup stick. It also allows any remaining liquid to flow out.
5. Return all beer bottles to the original box and throw the whole box out. That is like hitting the jackpot!
6. Throw trash where there is a rising hill next to the road. It is much easier and safer to pick up things on a hill rather than on downhill slope.
7. Avoid throwing trash into bushes, especially bramble bushes.
8. Plastic bags should have some thing in them to keep them from blowing up into trees.
Climbing tress can be dangerous, also some things are just easier to pick up in a plastic bag than lose by itself (use your imagination!).
9. Please do not throw your bottles AT the person picking up trash. The job is dangerous enough without being a target.

Please clip these guidelines and keep them handy in the visor of your vehicle.
