On a recent canoe paddle on the Cacapon river between Largent and Rockford Bridge I was
surprised by the increase from previous years in trash along the shore. This includes both routine shoreline trash
as well as large litter such as barrels, building debris and plastic tarps up in trees. It is probably due the higher
water this spring. Although the Friends of the Cacapon River cleans several sites along the river as a part of the
Chesapeake Bay Watershed Clean-up each spring, we have difficulty organizing lengthy shoreline clean-ups. I would
suggest that whenever anyone paddles the river that they carry a trash bag to pick up at least the cans and bottles
along the shore. I would also suggest that people who own property on the river, as well as homeowner associations
along the river, periodically walk their shorelines to remove trash. If we all did our part we would have a more beautiful
river.

Please note: There is a valuable 'Homeowner's Packet' of information that has been sent to all landowners along the length of the Cacapon River in Morgan County. It contains sound environmental advice on what to do and what not to do with properties in the riparian boundary of the Cacapon and other rivers as well as issues concerning septic systems, flooding and others. It can be found on this site by clicking Home Owner Packet above. Our group could use your support and membership to keep our river clean and provide you with useful information such as this. We are currently collecting addresses from homeowners in Hampshire County and will attempt a mailing in sections later.
You can help us maintain this site and complete other projects to help protect the river by joining our organization. The link to download the form is at the left. Mail it to us with a check for the dues and a contribution if you feel led. Thanks for visiting!
